Howard Droker is a Seattle historian and author, and retired attorney specializing in real estate law and estate planning.

This collection contains primarily material collected by Droker for his Ph. D. dissertation, The Seattle Civic Unity Committee and the Civil Rights Movement, 1944-1964, including report on and tape-recorded interviews with Jesse Epstein, Gary Gayton, Kenneth A. MacDonald, Samuel McKinney, and Alfred J. Westberg, concerning the Fair Housing Campaign in Seattle (1962-1964); and interview with MacDonald relating to his activities as member of the Washington State Board Against Discrimination; together with letters, writings, and published material by Droker. Includes material on Seattle houseboats and Seattle race relations during World War II as well as history of Seattle's Jewish community. Other persons represented include Sidney Gerber and Irene Burns Miller.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by Jesse Epstein on 13 Mar 1973; summary of interview Mr. Epstein describes the establishment of the Seattle Housing Authority, of which he was the first director, and the impact of black workers recruited from the South on the housing situation. He discusses community and black attitudes and integrated projects. He assesses the Seattle Civic Unity Committee and the effect of McCarthyism on the civil rights movement.
