Biographical Note
William Kozlowski (1841-1910) was born Wladyslaw Von Kozlowski in the German Kingdom of Prussia. Kozlowski immigrated to the Pacific Northwest in the early 1860s and became a U.S. citizen in 1875, returning to Prussia that same year to marry Augusta (Agnes) Spiegert (1846-1929). The couple moved to Seattle and had three children: Agnes (1877-1946) Pauline (1879-1929) and Victor (1882-1964).
William Kozlowsi was employed in the lumber trade, and Augusta Kozlowski was a member of the Pioneer Association of Washington and the Order of the Eastern Star. During the 1890s, the Kozlowski family resided at 523 Columbia Street in Seattle.
Agnes Kozlowski married William Mackenzie of Scotland, circa 1900. They resided in Seattle at 758 31st Avenue and had three children: Ruth, Victor and Donald. Pauline Kozlowski married Arthur Lang of Valdez, Alaska in 1908. Victor Kozlowski later changed his name to Victor G. Kay. In 1929, Augusta Kozlowski died at the Seattle home of her daughter, Agnes Mackenzie. Her son Victor, daughter Agnes, and three Mackenzie grandchildren survived her.
Content Description
The collection includes photographs of the Kozlowski family, in one photograph album, loose photographs cut from album pages, mounted studio portraits and small, informal snapshots. Seattle area subjects include parks, beaches, gardens, houses and social activities. A series of photographs taken near Valdez, Alaska in the late 1890s depicts shipping, towns and villages, wilderness scenery and outdoor recreation.
The Kozlowski family papers include legal documents such as an 1875 Prussian marriage certificate for William and Augusta Kozlowski, certificates of citizenship for William Kozlowski and William Mackenzie and Seattle baptismal certificates for Agnes and Pauline Kozlowski. Also included is an 1896 handwritten musical score for Agnes Kozlowski from Frank E. Plowman.
The correspondence consists of a recommendation from Henry Yesler in support of William Kozlowski, letters from James Colman and a personal note from Agnes Kozlowski to her father in 1887. Other items include an 1874 Prussian passport and a 1908 commemorative wedding book for Pauline Kozlowski and Arthur Lang.
