Biographical Note

Thomas Saunders English, born 1928, was a professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington. Before receiving his PhD at the University of Washington in 1961, with a thesis describing the distribution and abundance of planktonic flatfish eggs in Puget Sound, Saunders English completed graduate studies at the University of Oslo (1954-55), served in the U.S. Airforce at Fairbanks, Alaska (1956-58), and spent a year as a fisheries biology instructor at the University of Alaska (1958-59).

Saunders English joined the teaching faculty of the University of Washington Department of Oceanography in 1959. The next quarter of a century of his professional life was filled with teaching, research, and participation in base-line studies for the state and federal governments. His research interests revolved around problems of sampling design and plankton of the Arctic Ocean.
