Biographical Note
Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, IL. He studied in Ohio, Chicago, and New York and acquired a reputation as a poet and lecturer. Lindsay became famous for his walk from Springfield, IL to New Mexico in 1912, and for an unusual method of writing poetry. In 1924 he arrived in Spokane where he worked as a columnist for the Spokesman-Review. He returned to Springfield in 1929, and at the time of his death was a major figure in American poetry.
Content Description
The collection is a miscellaneous group of materials gathered over the years: newspaper clippings from Springfield and Spokane concerning Lindsay’s life, career, and critical evaluation; photographs of Lindsay and his wife, Spokane teacher, Elizabeth Conner Lindsay, and their children, Susan and Nicholas; a reminiscence, “Vachel Lindsay’s visit to Gearhart and Longview as remembered by Helen Johns” and a letter from Lindsay to Helen Johns; and sheets of printer’s proofs from several of Lindsay’s works.
