Historical Note

The Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation is located at 1801 16th Avenue SW on Harbor Island in Seattle. The shipyard was founded in 1916 by William Todd, a Brooklyn boilermaker, who purchased an existing shipyard from the Seattle Construction and Dry Dock Company.

The location of Todd Shipyard is seismically unstable, being constructed of infill land on top of a river delta. On April 13, 1949, at 11:55 a.m. a 7.1 magnitude earthquake occured in Western Washington centered between Olympia and Tacoma. The ground shook for about 30 seconds and was felt over a 230,000-square-mile area. Parts of Harbor Island rose as much as 16 inches and other parts dropped 12 inches.

The grounds and equipment at the Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle suffered damage as a result of the 1949 earthquake. A summary of earthquake damage and its probable effect on future facilities planning was reported on June 2, 1949.
