Historical Note
Walter King Stone was an American illustrator, painter and teacher. His illustrations, usually nature-themed, appeared in books, newspapers, and magazines, sometimes accompanied by essays he wrote. He worked closely with nature writer Walter Prichard Eaton. In 1909 he traveled to the New Forest in Germany with a letter of introduction from Gifford Pinchot. Stone was a professor of fine arts at Cornell University from 1920 to 1943. He and his wife, Edith Adams Stone, hosted salons, at which notable artists would assemble. During World War I he served in France with the YMCA.
