Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Louie Elmer Matteson was born in 1881 in Kingman, Kansas. During the Philippine-American War, he served in Company D of the 20th Infantry Regiment in the U.S. Army. He later lived in California, and died in 1957 in Yucaipa, California.

The collection consists of four letters that Louie E. Matteson wrote to his family while serving with the U.S. Army in the Philippines, dated between September 1900 and July 1901. Three of the letters are addressed to his parents, while one is addressed to his brother. These letters inquire into the family's status and describe Matteson's observations about the Philippines and its people. Two of the letters describe activities relating to the Filipino insurgency. The collection also includes a brief biographical outline of Matteson's life produced by his great niece, Glenna Kruger.
