The Portland Garden Club was founded in 1924 by Portland-area residents interested in gardening and horticulture. The club became a member of The Garden Club of America in 1928. Club efforts have included funding the curator's salary for the Rose Test Garden in Portland, donating land for parks, sponsoring legislative bills to protect native plants, developing various community gardens, supporting efforts to establish National Scenic Areas, and establishing scholarships for graduate students studying botany.
