Biographical Note

Dignity/Seattle, a branch of the Dignity/USA faith community of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Catholics, was founded in 1973 by six members, including chapter founder Donal "Dan" Harrington. After initially meeting in members' homes and at the Seattle Gay Center, Dignity/Seattle began to hold its monthly meetings and Masses at Sacred Heart Church in Queen Anne in 1976. In 1980, meetings moved to St. Joseph Church on Capitol Hill. Dignity/Seattle voted to leave St. Joseph Church in 2001 in light of the Seattle Archdiocese's opposition to the group's gender-inclusive and same-sex relationship-affirming ministry and other LGBTQ issues. Dignity/Seattle then moved its meetings to the Ravenna United Methodist Church, where the group continues its commitment to spiritual development, education, social justice, equality, social events, and other causes of interest to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Catholics.
