Historical Note

“Elderhostel is a nonprofit organization committed to being the preeminent provider of high quality, affordable, educational opportunities for older adults.” Whitworth College joined the program in 1989 as an extension of its outreach to adults and as a way to promote the college. Most participants resided in the campus dormitories for a week, involving attendance at three lectures per day devoted to a wide variety of topics of interest to adults. There were two to three sessions per summer. No grades were issued and homework was not required. Evening programs with voluntary attendance were also offered plus ample time for exercise and recreation. The program was discontinued in the year 2000 because most adults preferred the privacy of rooms equipped with private baths. It moved out to Camp Spalding on Davis Lake, 40 miles north of Spokane, Washington, under the sponsorship of the Presbytery of the Inland Northwest.
