The Herald Journal photograph collection consists of 67 boxes with approximately 3,000 batches of 35mm and 120mm black and white and color negatives taken between 1969-1990 as well as prints and proof sheets. Photographs from this collection document accidents, social and public events, organizations, buildings, government, and businesses in Cache Valley. Also included are scenic views of the area and scenes from Utah State University and public schools.

Content Description

The Herald Journal photograph collection consists of 67 boxes with 92,694 negatives 35mm and 120mm black and white and color negatives and 193 prints taken between 1969 and 1996. In many cases there are also proof sheets and photo assignments. These batches are usually of an event, person, activity, or organization from which one or two was selected to print in the newspaper.

Photographs from this collection document accidents, social and public events, organizations, buildings, government, and businesses in Cache Valley. Also included are scenic views of the area and scenes from Utah State University and public schools. The majority of these scenes are of high school and USU athletics, but there are also numerous images of student activities.

Principal Herald Journal photographers included Diane Bush, Ron Bingham, Dan Miller, Peter Schropp, and Doug Lind. Some photos appear to be submitted from USU students for a photography course.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

These materials are organized into series, roughly by format (negatives, prints) then by identifying information (photographer, subject matter, or date), if known. Boxes 1-6 (1969-1974) and Boxes 20-45 (1985-1988) are broken down into subjects which are arranged alphabetically and the images are arranged chronologically within the subject. Each photo sleeve is given its own number, but consists of several 35mm or 120mm black and white negatives. Boxes 7-17 use photo numbers which refer to year, month, and negative or proof sheet. The negatives were filed chronologically to the day within the month. Where the exact date was lacking, the negatives were filed at the end of the month. Boxes 46-62 are arranged by year, month and photographer when known. Boxes 63-65 and 67 contain prints that are arranged by subject matter while Box 66 contains candidate information with biographies and photos of candidates, arranged alphabetically by last name.

Initially processed in 1991 and revised 2001, 2011, and 2024.

Acquisition Information

This collection came to Special Collections and Archives in a series of shipments from 1978 to 1992. Many of the earliest images were mounted onto photo-boards.
