Historical Note

Edward Harrigan (1844-1911) was an actor, playwright, and songwriter. He is noted for his poignant portrayal of immigrant life in New York. Harrigan’s plays include Old Lavender, Cordelia’s Aspirations, The Leather Patch, Waddy Googan, and others. Following a partnership with Tony Hart, he built Harrigan’s Theater in New York in 1890, where his plays were produced for many years.

Collection contains biographical information; magazine and newspaper articles concerning Harrigan and his career; theatre notices and advertisements; correspondence; reception cards; stock certificates for the Chicora Importing and Exporting Company; a receipt documenting an agreement regarding Fourteenth Street Theatre; and a songbook titled A Collection of Songs by Harrigan and Dave Braham.
