Content Description
The papers include an exchange of correspondence (207 letters) between Alexander Kerr and Katherine Brown, 1855-1856. At the time, she was a student at the Rockford Female Seminary in Rockford, Illinois, and he was first, a student at Beloit College, then a teacher at Houston Academy in Houston, Georgia. Miss Brown later became Mrs. Kerr. There is also a diary, 1863, kept by Kerr when he was school superintendent in Beloit.
With the Alexander Kerr papers are letters of his brother, James B. Kerr. One series of five letters, 1863-1864, is from various points in Tennessee and Georgia, when James B. was Lieutenant Colonel in the 74th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. There is a later series from James B., son of A. Kerr, to Mabel Bushnell, written when he was an attorney in Madison, Wisconsin and travelling in Europe. The papers also include miscellaneous Alexander Kerr manuscripts and published works.
