Historical Note

The California Gold Rush began in 1848 with the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill. Hundreds of thousands of peopel traveled to California hoping to make their fortune. The gold rush lasted until about 1855.

Content Description

The California gold mines letter collection (1849-1853) consists of nine letters describing life in California during the Gold Rush. Most of the letters are from a Melvin Paden to his wife, Jane. Also included is a petition to the California State Legislature requesting it to alter laws for the protection of miners and their use of water.
