Historical Note
Arnold Schulman was an American screenwriter, playwright, producer, and novelist, known for his acclaimed work in film and television. Born in August 1925 to a Jewish family, Schulman attended the University of North Carolina where he studied writing. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, he moved to New York in 1946 to pursue his career and studied playwrighting at New York’s American Theatre Wing. Schulman began scripting television shows in the early 1950s before transitioning to Hollywood films in 1957. He received three Writers Guild nominations for Best Screenplay for "Wild is the Wind," "A Hole in the Head," and "Love with the Proper Stranger," winning the award for "Goodbye, Columbus." Additionally, he earned Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay in 1963 for "Love with the Proper Stranger" and for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1969 for "Goodbye, Columbus." Schulman also authored a biography of his guru, Sathya Sai Baba, titled Baba, published in 1971. Arnold Schulman passed away in February 2023, at the age of 97.
