Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Seattle Arts Commission was established in 1971 to support public arts programs and promote public awareness of the performing and fine arts. Staff support was originally provided by the Seattle Center. In 1973, SAC began administering the Citys One-Percent-for-Art Program. The fifteen-member Commission replaced a predecessor agency, the Municipal Arts Commission. In 2002, a reorganization abolished the existing SAC, created a new Seattle Arts Commission and a new Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, and divided the functions of the old SAC between the two new agencies.
