Historical Note

The Division of Plastic Surgery originated with the recruitment of Clifford C. Snyder, M.D. by the University of Utah in 1967. It gained an international reputation for expertise in a variety of fields including microsurgery, hand reconstruction, treatment of venomous snake bites, bladder extrophy, and treatment of children with indeterminate sexual formation. Graham D. Lister, M.D., took over as the division chairperson in 1987. Dr. Lister was internationally recognized as a leading plastic and reconstructive surgeon by various international groups. He achieved a great deal of recognition by acting as president for both the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He resigned as chair of the division in 1999. The division formally changed its name from the Division of Plastic Surgery to the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1991. It continues to pursue state-of-the-art patient care using the latest surgical and technological advances, education of both surgical residents and medical students, and research focused on advancing the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
