Historical Note

During the period covered by this collection, the Department of Physics engaged in two major research projects. The first project was a collaboration with the Laser Institute at the University's Health Sciences Center to study the interactions of the free electron laser with biological systems as well as other systems in physics, chemistry, and materials science. Secondly, the department collaborated with state government to bring the Department of Energy sponsered $2-4 million superconducting super collider-known as the "Desertron"- to the State of Utah. The project was ultimately awarded to the State of Texas in 1987 and was later cancelled by Congress in 1993.

Content Description

The bulk of the material in this collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and reports generated during the administrations of Chairs Eugene C. Loh (1980-1989) and P. Craig Taylor (1989-1997). One linear foot of material is comprised of records pertaining to the Physics Department's collaboration with the Laser Institute at the University Health Sciences Center to conduct research with the free electron laser. Another 2.25 linear feet of material pertain to the Physics Department's efforts in assisting the state government in attracting the superconducting super collider to the State of Utah. The last 1.5 linear feet of the collection is comprised of chronological day files from Eugene C. Loh's administration as the Chair of the Physics Department.
