Historical Note

The Women's Resource Center was founded in 1971 as a means of improving the general quality of coed education at the University of Utah through the implementation of programs which were responsive to the needs and concerns of female students, faculty, and staff. During the period covered by this collection, the Women's Resource Center fulfilled its mission by implementing a Women's Studies Program, establishing a branch office for the Higher Education Resource Services network for the western United States (HERS/WEST), starting the Project on Single Parent Students, sponsoring an annual Women's Conference, holding seminars and workshops, and advocating for child care services at the University of Utah.

Content Description

This collection contains brochures, correspondence, course materials, fliers, memoranda, minutes, news articles, newsletters, press releases, proposals, reports, and surveys, the bulk of which comes from the administration of Shauna Adix (1971-1989) and the acting directorship of Beverly Purrington (June-August 1989). Approximately one half of a linear foot of material originates from University of Utah departments out-side of the Women's Resource Center. This includes records from earlier women's programs offered through the Extension Division and the Division of Continuing Education. Another half of a linear foot of material is from non-University of Utah organizations with which the Women's Resource Center had interacted.
