Content Description

The Alonzo Huckins diary was kept by Huckins during his travels in the 1860s. It contains almost no dates and is primarily concerned with listing the proper mileage between differing points along his routes. Each point notes available grass, wood, water, buffalo chips, and sage brush. The journal is divided into three accounts. The first is from Fort Leavenworth to Camp Floyd by way of Fort Laramie, South Pass, and Fort Bridger. The second is from Fort Leavenworth by way of Fort Riley to Pawnee Fort in Kansas Territory. The third is from Fort Riley to Fort Kearney, Nebraska Territory. The journal also includes mention of land and supply purchases and two poems. Folder 1 contains a photocopy of the original diary located in Reserve. Researchers are requested to use the photocopy for access. The original diary is FRAGILE.

Folder 2 contains a few items discuss the genealogy of the Huckins family.
