Historical NoteReturn to Top
Vonda N. McIntyre was born in 1948 in Louisville, Kentucky. She later moved to Seattle, Washington where she lived until her death in April 2019. McIntyre obtained a Bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Washington and later pursued graduate studies in genetics at the same institution.
McIntyre spent the majority of her career writing science fiction, editing, and creating media tie-ins. She wrote several tie-ins for Star Trek, including "The Entropy Effect" and "Enterprise: The First Mission". Additionally, McIntyre wrote various articles, often on feminist science fiction and the genre as a whole. She attended various conferences and workshops, leading to her founding of the Clarion West Writing Workshop in 1971. McIntyre kept frequent correspondence with many authors; including Ursula K. Le Guinn, James Tiptree Jr., Paul Preuss, Robin McKinley, Nisi Shawl, Molly Gloss, and others. She was also largely involved with various feminist science fiction publications. This included her correspondence with Amanda Bankier, publisher of "The Witch and the Chameleon", and co-editor Susan Janice Anderson for "Aurora: Beyond Equality" in 1976.
Her works have won both national and international awards; including the Nebula Award for "Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand" in 1973, and for "The Moon and the Sun" in 1996. Her novel "Dreamsnake" received the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus awards in 1979. Her correspondence with Ursula K. le Guinn, Alice B. Sheldon (James Tiptree, Jr.), and Molly Gloss are also with the authors' collections; housed at the University of Oregon's Special Collections and University Archives.
