Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ratna Roy was born in Ranchi, Bihar, India and trained in classical Katthak Dance from the age of four. Roy received her B.A. in English from Ranchi University in 1962, her M.A. in English from Calcutta University in 1964, and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Oregon in 1972. Roy began training in Orissi (also known as Odissi) dance initially for rehabilitation from physical disabilities and later applied herself to a deeper understanding of the form. She received a Fulbright Scholarship (1985-1986) to travel to Orissa and study the rediscovery of Odissi dance in India. She returned to India on an American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowship in 1988 to research the indigenous theater traditions of Orissa. In 1989, she received the National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowship. Roy works as a choreographer, dancer, and teacher in the Pacific Northwest, across the United States, in India and internationally.

David J. Capers is a photographer and documentarian, focused on the masters of Odissi Dance and the activities of the Urvasi Dance Ensemble. Capers graduated from The Evergreen State College with a specialization in moving image. He accompanied Roy on both of her Fulbrights and on her American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowship in India. He also traveled to India on his own Fulbright scholarship. His photographs have been exhibited in India and throughout the United States and Canada.
