Historical Note

In the autumn of 1984, a group of musicians met to discuss the creation of a professional string orchestra, the only ensemble of its kind in residence in Montana. Since then, the String Orchestra of the Rockies (SOR) has become a regular part of Montana's musical life. This unique orchestra draws upon the finest string players in the state, including faculty of the University of Montana in Missoula and Montana State University in Bozeman, members of the Cascade Quartet in Great Falls, and other professional teachers and performers from Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, and Missoula. SOR performs without a conductor, relying on the inner cohesion and expertise of its musicians.

The orchestra has been heard across Montana on network television's "People and Places Under the Big Sky" and throughout the United States on National Public Radio's "Performance Today." SOR continues to build on its record of accomplishment, rising to a higher level of artistic development. The orchestra two has produced two CDs. Both have been released nationally and regionally. Through its years of growth, the purposes of the String Orchestra of the Rockies have remained constant: 1) to enhance and enrich the cultural climate of the region by providing classical music of the highest caliber, by providing regular concerts, 2) to provide resource support to public and private music education programs for Montana's children.
