Historical Note

James C. Nelson (1867-1944) was a principal and high-school teacher in Salem, Oregon. He was much interested in the literature of Brazil, and corresponded with Brazilian writers.

The collection consists of 198 letters written to Nelson by Brazilian authors. Most of the letters are from Arthur Coelho de Sousa. Other correspondents include Olympio Guilherme, Jose Monteiro Lobato, Mario Melo, Rachel de Queiroz, and Francisco Rosa.
