Biographical Note

Constance Allen Pitter Thomas (1917-2006) was an African American and a native Seattleite. She attended the University of Washington in the post-Depression years, majoring in speech and drama. She received her degree in 1941. After briefly pursuing a career as an actress in New York city, she returned to Seattle and became a substitute teacher for Seattle Public Schools for 11 years eventually landing a permanent job as a speech therapist and instructor of youth with disabilities.

    Scope and Content: Tape recorded interviews conducted by Mrs. John J. Gayton and Richard C. Berner on 7 Apr 1971 (tape 59) and 15, 21, 29 Apr 1971 (tape 60); transcript for 7 Apr interview. Interviews are the beginning of Constance Allen Pitter Thomas' reminiscence on her life in Seattle.

    Restrictions on Access: The interviews were originally recorded on magnetic media. Users will need to arrange to have the originals transferred to digital format before the interview can be accessed. The partial transcript is open to all users.
