Biographical Note

Josiah "Joe" Colcord was a University of Washington professor of civil engineering from 1949 until his retirement in 1990. He had a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine and a MS from the University of Minnesota. Colcord had a particular interest in the history of engineering, and following his retirement he continued to teach a course for the University gratis, entitled "The Heritage of Civil Engineering." He was active in the American Society of Civil Engineers, in particular the History and Heritage section through which he was instrumental in gaining official recognition for numerous local and national civil engineering historical sites.

Colcord served as a 2nd Lieutenant of the 75th Infantry Division during World War II on the European front. He was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze and Silver Stars, and the British Military Cross.

Colcord was born on June 15, 1922, and passed away on October 21, 2007.
