Douglas Dent was a timber felling expert whose techniques were used by logging companies as well as the United States Forest Service. This collection contains ten 16mm films produced by Dent in 1977 on various aspects of timber falling and one film produced by Rarig’s Inc. Film Productions in 1966.

Biographical Note

D. Douglas "Doug" Dent was born in Redmond, Oregon on June 29, 1945 to Al and Mary Dent. He was the second of five boys. Dent graduated from Redmond High School in 1963 and attended Portland State University. He married Jeannie Rennolds in Reno, Nevada on March 12, 1969. The couple would have two children.

Dent was an educator on timber falling and produced films and books on the subject. He taught his techniques to and shared his expertise with logging companies, the United States Forest Service, and other federal agencies responsible for wildland firefighting. He lived and worked in Oregon until his death in March 2012.

Content Description

This collection contains 11 timber falling training films, ten of which were created and produced and directed by D. Douglas Dent. The films were purchased by Champion International for training purposes. The films are all 16mm, on 400 foot reels, and in color with sound.

Researchers are responsible for using in accordance with 17 U.S.C. and any other applicable statutes. Copyright to the films produced by Dent is held by Dent family members.

In 2021, all motion picture film reels were cleaned, cored, and rehoused for preservation purposes.

In 2023, all motion picture film reels were digitized for preservation purposes only.
