Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Florence Ethela Thieme was born in Helena, Montana, on May 15, 1888 to Frederick and Margaret Thieme. She moved to Missoula in 1905 to attend the University of Montana. After graduating in 1909, Florence spent a few years as a school teacher in Augusta, Montana. Florence met her husband, Ray Hamilton, during her time at the university, and they married in 1912. Florence and Ray lived in Missoula until Ray’s death in 1952. Florence moved to Oregon with her daughter, Eileen, and remained there until her death in 1974.

The Florence Thieme Hamilton Papers contain one scrapbook, a pocket Bible, loose photographs of the University of Montana, and a series of scanned and original documents and images tracing Thieme-Hamilton family history compiled by Chris Hamilton, Florence’s grandson.
The scrapbook contains photographs, clippings, programs, and correspondence from Florence’s time at the University of Montana from 1905-1909. Some of the material in the scrapbook also pertains to Ray Hamilton, Florence’s husband, who was a UM basketball player and member of the Iota Nu fraternity.

Custodial History
The collection was held by Florence Thieme Hamilton’s grandson, Chris Hamilton, until he donated it to the University of Montana, Mansfield Library Archives and Special Collections in 2022.

Separated Materials
A copy of the 1916 National Parks Portfolio by Robert Sterling Yard for the Department of the Interior was removed for cataloging.
