Historical Note

John Wilkens was a graduate student in Journalism at University of Colorado at Boulder in the early 1990s when Colorado’s Amendment 2 was being proposed, debated, approved, and ultimately ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1996. (Amendment 2 was a voter-approved measure barring local governments from providing legal protections to people who identify as LGBT.) While at CU, Wilkens began keeping newspaper clipping files on the debate as well as tangential coverage about LGBT issues for a potential doctoral project. The collection dates from January 1991 to June 1996 and is sourced primarily from the major newspapers in Denver and Boulder.

Content Description

The collection contains thousands of newspaper articles from between 1991 and 1996 involving LGBT rights in Colorado and general coverage of LBGT issues, personalities, and culture taking place throughout the US.
