Historical Background
Sunnyside is in Yakima County, Washington. It started as a settlement by irrigation engineer Walter Granger in 1893. Sunnyside was a small town, exceeding 300 people by 1901 and it was incorporated in 1902. The population dramatically increased with the arrival of the Dunkards in 1903. The Dunkards bought a significant portion of the town's land and established strong, Christian community values.
The town experienced significant growth in the early 20th century. Around 1905 the Washington Irrigation Company, which had its roots with the Sunnyside Canal, was purchased by the Federal Bureau of Reclamation. This paved the way for a federally-funded irrigation project that extended through Yakima valley. In 1906, Sunnyside got a station along the Pacific railroad. The combination of these factors turned Sunnyside into a farm town that was easy to access by people through the railways.
