Historical Note
Following a bitter and prolonged fight among the officers and directors of the First National Bank of Missoula, Ferdinand Kennett, Gustavus A. Wolf, James H.T. Ryman, Charles Otto, Lucretia Worden, Levi J. Fisk, and August Wierich established the Western Montana National Bank on March 21, 1889. The bank charter designated Kennett, Wolf, Ryman, Otto, and Fisk as the board of directors; with Kennett as president, Ryman as vice-president, and Wolf as cashier. The enterprise began with a capital of $75,000. The bank was first located at the corner of Main and Higgins in Missoula, Montana, but moved to the corner of Broadway and Higgins in 1910.
Content Description
This collection primarily consists of large bound bank ledgers with a small set of loose bank documents. Bound volumes range from daily transaction ledgers to individual account activity balance sheets. Included is one daily cashbook from the earliest years of the bank and several separated indices for locating client entries in the individual account volumes. Loose bank documents include promotional brochures, news articles, one undated photograph from a bank open house, and a 1929 Western Montana National Bank note.

Series II: Financial Records, 1889-1929
17 linear feetThis series consists of 54 bound volumes and three rolls of microfilm. None of the volumes employ shorthand descriptions or key guides. All volumes are in fair, but delicate, condition. In 1983 four bound individual account ledgers were loaned to the archives for microfilming. Microfilmed volumes 1, 2, and 4 are copies of original bound volumes now in the collection. Duplicate microfilm volumes (mv) correspond to the following bound volumes (bv): mv 1 = bv 42; mv 2 = bv 46; mv 4 = bv 53.
The series includes several client indices, each associated with a particular ledger volume. For volumes 34 through 54, bank personnel incorporated client indices into the bound volumes.
