Historical Note
Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (often nicknamed Fiji) was founded May 1, 1848, at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. It has since initiated nearly 180,000 brothers and has approximately 10,000 undergraduate brothers in 142 chapters and 13 Delta Colonies in the United States and Canada. The University of Washington has had a chapter, Sigma Tau, since 1900. It was preceded for only a year by the Gama Sigma proposed chapter, founded by Ross Chesnut. When it was officially received into Phi Gamma Delta the name was changed to Sigma Tau, S for Seattle and T for Tacoma. It was the second fraternity established on the campus.
Content Description
Three yearbooks, "Husky Fiji", from the University of Washington fraternity. The yearbooks emphasize social, sport, and academic achievements of its members. Based on the nickname 'Fiji', the fraternity used racist caricatures of Black and Pacific Islanders on the covers and within the publications.
