Historical Note
Richard Leveridge Hoxie (1844-1930) was born in New York State, and was educated in Italy and Iowa. His military career began with the Civil War, in which he enlisted as a bugler at age seventeen. Promoted to corporal, in Company F 1st Iowa Infantry, he served in Missouri and Arkansas as a guerilla. In 1863, Hoxie was recommended by his Captain for West Point, from which he graduated in the class of 1868. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1872, he had been posted to Jefferson Barracks in Missouri, and Boston Harbour. He served with Wheeler during his 1872-1873 field seasons. In 1874, he was promoted to Chief Engineer of the District of Columbia under the Temporary Board of Commissioners, and became Assistant to the Engineer Commissioner of the District in 1878. He retired as a Brigadier General in 1908. He was married to Vinnie Ream (1847-1914), a "well-known sculptress," in 1878. He later married May Ruth Norcross in 1917.
