Historical Note

Stuart Loory (1932-2015) started his journalism career at the New York Herald Tribune in 1959. He was based in Washington D.C. (1963-1964) and in Moscow (1964-1966). From 1967-1971 he worked for the Los Angeles Times as a White House correspondent and in 1975, as managing editor for the Chicago Sun-Times. Loory was also a fellow at Woodrow Wilson Center from 1971 to 1972. From 1973 to 1975, He was the first Kiplinger professor of Public Affairs Reporting At Ohio State University. During the 1980s and 1990s he was editor, Moscow bureau chief, and vice president for CNN. Loory also published books about the war in Vietnam. In 1997 he became a journalism professor at the School of Journalism, University of Missouri in Columbia. While there, he was editor of a magazine and radio show called Global Journalist.

The Stuart Loory papers include copies of articles by Stuart Loory, professional correspondence (1963-1980)(including letters from Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, Senator Walter F. Mondale, Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger), subject files used in writing his books "The Secret Search for Peace in Vietnam" and "Defeated," interview transcripts, manuscripts, photographs (including some with President John F. Kennedy, President Lyndon B. Johnson, President Richard M. Nixon,President Jimmy Carter, President Mikhail Gorbatchev, President Boris Yeltsin, Ted Turner, and Jane Fonda), slides, negatives, cassette tapes, U-Mat tapes, VHS tapes, and digital material.
