Historical Note

Edmund C. Rice was a pioneer of radio and television, producing and writing for a variety of shows from the 1930s to the 1960s. Rice was born on October 10, 1910 in Ossining, New York. His career began in the mid-1930s at the J. Walter Thompson Co. in New York City, writing for many of the period’s popular radio programs including “The Chase and Sanborn Hour,” “The Kraft Music Hall,” and “Shell Chateau,” and in 1952 he became vice president of the company. With the advent of television, Rice became editor and head writer of “The Kraft Television Theater” for 11 years and contributed to several other shows broadcast during the early years of live television. He also wrote comedy sketches for the 1950 Broadway review, including “Tickets Please.” Rice died of cancer on March 28, 1982 at the age of 72.
