Historical Background
In 1925, Thomas Gaffney moved from Sprague, WA to Maple Valley, WA. He started a resort on the shores of Lake Wilderness which had restaurants, beaches, a dance pavilion, skating rink, and other attractions. The Lake Wilderness Lodge was constructed in the 1950s. It was designed by the Young & Richardson & Carlston & Detlie architectural firm. In 1952, the building received the highly prestigious American Institute of Architecture and Washington State Design awards. It was designated a King County landmark in 1997, cited as an excellent example of "post-war, Northwest architecture." The lodge has a thirty-three foot totem pole, surrounded by a spiral staircase which serves as a structural column supporting the hotel roof. Currently, the Lake Wilderness Lodge is owned and operated by the City of Maple Valley.
