Historical Note

Forace George Green was born to George Alfred Green Jr. and Lucy May Brady Green on 30 June 1910 in Union, Utah. He became a Boy Scout in 1924 at the age of 14 and remained active in scouting for the rest of his life. From 1930 to 1933, Green served a mission for the LDS Church in the eastern United States as Scout Commissioner. He returned from his mission in 1933 and entered Brigham Young University. The following year, he married Edna I. Lauritzen in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The couple lived in Provo until 1936, when Green received his degree in journalism. That same year, Green received his Eagle Scout badge and began publishing the South Lake Herald. In 1944, he began the Granite Park Press, and four years later he became the scouting editor of the Deseret News. In 1955, he started the LDS Book Club, patterned after the Book of the Month Club. He was also the owner and operator of the Union Beaver Ranch. In 1965, the Greens moved to Kanab where Forace was active in LDS Church affairs and wrote a column for the Southern Utah News. The Greens traveled to Europe, Hawaii, Israel, Jordan, Syria, and other countries with church-sponsored groups.

Content Description

The Forace George Green papers (1910-1988) consist of fifty-eight disassembled scrapbooks documenting the life of Green (1910-1988), a Utah journalist, publisher, and author. The scrapbooks contain photographs, correspondence, greeting cards, programs, news clippings, postcards, family histories, and a variety of personal memorabilia. Green's long-time affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America is documented in this collection. Much of the material, however, pertains to the Green and Lauritzen families. In addition, there are documents related to the LDS Book Club, various wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), Utah's Millcreek Canyon, the Liberty Jail visitor's center in Missouri, and the National Beaver Association.
