Historical Note
The Indian Training School at Forest Grove, Oregon was established in 1880 as an 'off reservation' boarding school. It served the Pacific Northwest with students coming from Oregon and the territories of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. Studies included various academic disciplines, plus industrial training (farming, blacksmithing, shoemaking, carpentry, for example) for the boys and housekeeping skills for the girls.
The school closed its Forest Grove campus in 1885 and moved to Salem, Oregon where it operates today as Chemawa Indian School.
