Biographical Note

Richard W. Behan was born April 18, 1933 in Evanston, Illinois. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Forestry from the University of Montana before spending six years in Alaska. Following his work in Alaska, Behan earned a Ph.D. in Wildland Resource Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Behan went on to teach natural resource policy at the University of Montana for 12 years. After teaching at the University of Montana, Behan accepted a faculty position at Northern Arizona University where he eventually became Dean of the School of Forestry. Beyond the halls of academia, Behan served as a consultant for various government agencies, which included the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.

Content Description

The Richard W. Behan Papers contain documents, correspondence, reports, publications, and photographs created and collected by Richard Behan during his tenure as a professor in the School of Forestry at the University of Montana. The files include materials from his participation on the Bolle Committee, which investigated forest management practices in the Bitterroot National Forest and created what is known as the Bolle Report, and photographs by Behan of University of Montana faculty and campus activities.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in four series:

Series I: Bolle Committee, 1969-1975, 0.5 linear feet

Series II: University of Montana School of Forestry Photographs, 1974-1975, 0.25 linear feet

Series III: University of Montana Faculty Portraits, 1973 and 1975, 4 folders

Series IV: University of Montana Campus Activity Photographs, 1970 and 1972, 0.25 linear feet

Custodial History

Richard Behan maintained custody of these materials until he donated them to the University of Montana.

Acquisition Information

Richard Behan donated these materials to the Archives in 2014 and 2019.

Processing Note

In processing, physical photographs were placed in folders. Photographs in the first three series were arranged in alphabetical order and the images in series IV have been left in their original order.

Separated Materials

Duplicate images were removed in processing.
