Biographical Note

K. Ross (Kenneth Ross) Toole was born August 8, 1920, in Missoula, Montana. He received a B.A. in History in 1946 and M.A. in History, American West, in 1948, both from the University of Montana - Missoula (then called Montana State University - Missoula). He finished his Ph.D. in History, American West, from the University of California - Los Angeles in 1955. Toole taught at the University of Montana as the A.B. Hammond Professor of Western History from 1965 until 1981.

At the University of Montana Toole taught and advised graduate students. He also taught one undergraduate history course every year called "Montana and the West". The course attracted over 1,000 students annually in Toole's last years at the University. Toole's classroom lectures were often taped and some were broadcast on the Montana Public Radio station KUFM in Missoula, Montana. Shortly before his death in 1981, Toole delivered the "Montana and the West" lectures for the final time. This final series was recorded Montana Quality Television (MQTV), edited, and broadcast in 1985.

Kenneth Ross Toole died of cancer on August 13, 1981.

    5 DVDs

In 1981, MQTV filmed Toole’s final lecture series of his Montana and the West course. The full series was edited into 20 half hour programs which MQTV broadcast in 1985. MQTV illustrated the footage with maps, graphs, photos, and live video that they procured from the Mansfield Library’s Archives and Special Collections, the Montana Historical Society, and other research entities. Each program investigates a different part of Montana’s history. The programs did not air in a chronological sequence based on the materials presented, nor was the lecture series considered a comprehensive treatment of Montana state history. Rather it was K. Ross Toole’s perspective about Montana, the culmination of decades of study and research.
