Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Eileen Ryan (1923- ) was a schoolteacher and an activist in the environmental and conservation movements in Seattle.
Ryan was born in Kent, Washington, in 1923 and attended Holy Names Academy, Seattle University, and National Catholic University in Washington D.C. She taught in the Seattle School District from 1958-1984. Ryan worked summers on the Double K Ranch in Gooseprairie as a wrangler, taking people on trail rides, hunting, fishing, and helping at the ranch. She became acquainted with William O. Douglas at the Double K Ranch. Ryan became active in the environmental movement to promote the Cougar Lakes Wilderness Area which later became the William O. Douglas Wilderness Area. She served as a board member of the North Cascades Conservation Council from 1967-1969.

Materials include correspondence, clippings, maps, and other materials relating to conservation and the environment in the Pacific Northwest. Of note is a manuscript map based on the Forest Service proposal of February 1959 for Glacier Peak Wildnerness Area. Her papers also include photographs from the Duwamish School where she was a teacher.
