Historical Note
Maurine Brown Nueberger was Born in Cloverdale, Oregon, in 1907 to parents Walter T. Brown and Ethel Kelty-Brown. Maurine grew up in a rural setting, and her father was a country doctor. Her mother, a member of the Kelty family, was among the first families of white settlers in Oregon. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon in 1929. She taught English and physical education in Portland, Oregon schools and married Richard L. Neuberger in 1945. From 1950 to 1955 she served in the Oregon Legislature as a Democrat from Multnomah County.
By 1955, Maurine was serving her third term in the Oregon state Legislator. Her hobbies included photography, some of which is contained in the collection, and gardening the native shrubs and flowers of the Pacific Northwest. She was a part of the League of Women Voters and American Association of University Women. After 1955, she moved to Washington D.C. to be with Richard. She took a break from politics until Richard's death in 1960. She served the remaining months of her husband's term and ran for his senate seat and served a six-year term in the senate from 1961-1967. After this she returned to Portland and continued to teach and support public causes and initiatives. Following her time in the Senate, Neuberger lectured at Boston University, Harvard University, and Reed College. She died in Portland in 2000 and remains the only female senator elected from Oregon. Maurine Neuberger was concerned with educational and consumer issues but specifically addressed women's double burden and worked for the greater involvement of women in politics. Religiously Unitarian, she was socially liberal and was an advocate for women's rights and equality in public spaces.
Content Description
This collection contains material documenting Maurine Neuberger's time in the United States Senate, both the short time she spent fulfilling her husband's term after his death as well as her own six year term, in sum covering November 8, 1960 to January 3, 1967. The collection has been divided into two sections, the largest of which are papers covering Neuberger's political career and work; a smaller section of personal material is also included. Political papers are organized by topic, originally identified by Neuberger's office, and include inter and intra-office correspondence, memos, notes, reports, newsletters, and more. There is also a large collection of constituent correspondence, much of which are copies of Neuberger's responses to communication from her constituents on issues such as animal welfare, legislation, war, civil rights, and more. Additional information about specific topics covered in each series can be found at the series and sub-series level. This collection primarily contains paper material, though a small amount of audiovisual material, primarily consisting of film reels, is also included. These have not been reformatted and access may be limited. Also included are photographic prints such as official headshots, media images, and snapshots from official trips, as well as a number of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings.
There is a small amount of material from Richard Neuberger's time in office. The University of Oregon also has a collection of Richard Neuberger's papers, in which the bulk of records documenting Richard Neuberger's work can be found. The Richard Neuberger material found in this collection of Maurine Neuberger's papers was received together with the rest of her papers and was likely leftover in office after she took over his Senate seat.
Included in the personal papers series of this collection are some personal correspondence, primarily between Maurine Neuberger and her mother Ethel Kelty-Brown, photographs, an album of photographs from Neuberger's wedding to Phil Solomon in her later life, some biographical material, and related documents.
