Biographical Note

Professor of Chemistry, University of Washington.

Schomaker was born in 1914. He received a B.S. (1934) and an M.S. (1935) from the University of Nebraska. He received his Ph.D. (1938) from the California Institute of Technology, where he was also a Hale Fellow (1938-1940) and Senior Fellow (1940-1945). Schomaker obtained his Ph.D. with Linus Pauling and contributed substantial structural information to Pauling for his work The Nature of the Chemical Bond. He left Cal Tech in 1958 to work for the Union Carbide Research Institute in New York. In 1965, he joined the University of Washington's Chemistry Department as chair of the department, a position he held until 1970. His research at the UW centered on x-ray crystallographic studies of zeolites and other inorganic and organic molecules. He retired from the UW in 1983 and died in 1997.
