Kenneth Pyle papers, 1919-2012

Kenneth B. Pyle is a distinguished Japan historian and professor emeritus of History and International Studies at the University of Washington. He received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1958 and his Ph.D. in Japanese History from Johns Hopkins University in 1965, where he was the Walter Hines Page Fellow in International Relations.

Pyle has made significant contributions to the field of Japan studies. He served as the founding editor of the Journal of Japanese Studies from 1974 to 1986 and directed the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington from 1978 to 1988.

Pyle's work has earned him prestigious honors, including the Order of the Rising Sun from the Japanese government in 1998 and the Japan Foundation Award for Japanese Studies in 2008. He is also the Founding President of The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and continues to contribute to the organization as a member of its Board of Directors.
