Historical Note

The office of Facilities and Planning did not exist as a full-time staffed administrative department at WSU until 1947. Prior to this a University Architect served as the construction officer of WSU dating to 1911. Facilities and Planning was later renamed as Facilities and Development in 1993, and then as Capital Planning in 2001. The office of Facilities Operations descended from the Physical Plant in 1998, which in turn descended from Building and Grounds in 1967. While each line of programs has existed separately some migration in function has occurred over the years. The primary difference between Capital Planning and Facilities Operations is the cost of the project in question.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

This is an unprocessed collection. Any arrangement reflects either a pre-existing order from the records' creators or previous custodians, or preliminary sorting performed by staff.

As much as possible, materials remained in the order in which they were received, though they were rehoused. Most records from individual buildings are together, but the buildings themselves appear to be in no particular order. The process of rehousing these began in 2019, with boxes 1 to 26 of the 100 received compressed into new boxes 1-21. However, beginning with original box 27, the materials appeared to have been sent over in a chaotic order, often unlabeled, which bore little relation to the contents list. As a result, 13 boxes were returned to Facilities, and may eventually come back to MASC, at which point they'll be treated as a new accession. The remaining 61 boxes of the materials were reboxed in Jan. 2026, forming the current boxes 22 to 57. Much of this portion of the materials were rearranged during rehousing, and significant quantities of material were discarded.
