Historical NoteReturn to Top
Eugene Morlock Emme was born November 3, 1919 in Evanston, Illinois. He was an historian of science and technology and an aerospace historian. His education included a BA from Morningside College in Iowa, 1941; MA, University of Iowa, 1946 and Ph. D. in 1949 both in Modern European History. He was a Navy pilot in the Pacific in World War II. He served in the Air Force Reserves, 1948-1972, retiring with the rank of colonel. In 1949, he became public historian for the Air University of the U.S. Air Force in Montgomery, Alabama before joining NASA, 1959-1979, as chief historian. His published books included: "The Impact of Air Power" 1959, "The History of Rocket Technology" 1964, and "A History of Space Flight" 1965. Emme wrote a brief survey of NASA in 1965, entitled "Historical Sketch of NASA (EP 29)", which was revised and expanded in 1976 by Frank W. Anderson, Jr. Emme was a member of many scholarly societies including the American Astronautical Society for over 25 years. He died in 1985.

The Eugene Morlock Emme collection contains: correspondence, clippings, manuscripts, newsletters, inventories, reports, notes, financial records, bibliographies, and subject files which cover decades of his career. Topics include: space law, agency policy, astronautics, aeronautics, NASA, National Air and Space Museum, institutional archives management, World War II, German military during World War II, aviation, military procedure, education and training, national defense, and military medicine. There are also numerous books, both government publications and commercial publications, from the 1940s through the 1980s. There are 27 cassette tapes of the histories of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). A 16 mm film, "Gunnery Film: SNJ Aircraft, Against Sleeve target, July - 1945" (Corpus Christi) and two 45 rpm records entitled, "Lunar Landing", highlights of the Mercury Space Flight and Apollo 11 Mission are included.
