Historical Note

The Hebrew Ladies' Free Loan Society of Seattle was an independent volunteer service organization which made free loans available to needy persons of the Jewish faith. Patterned after the traditional "Gmilith Khesed" (the free-loan organizations which existed in the small-town Jewish communities of Eastern Europe) the Seattle H.L.F.L.S. was first organized in 1909. Over the years the maximum amount loaned increased, and the Society began to loan to organizations as well as to individuals, but the basic purpose of the society - to make interest free loans to needy Jews - remained the same. The society was dissolved in 1976. Its work is to be carried on by the Jewish Family and Child Service. [Hebrew Ladies' Free Loan Society is not related in any way to Hebrew Free Loan Association. Seattle., which was founded in 1914.]
