Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Yoshiaki Mukai was born in Washington in 1918 to Japanese-born parents. He attended Broadway High School before enrolling at the University of Washington, where he was a fifth-year senior studying Electrical Engineering in December 1941. Following Executive Order 9066, Mukai and his family were first sent to the Puyallup Assembly Center before being moved to the Minidoka Relocation Center in Idaho. He received his diploma for his degree of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering while he was interned at the camp. While at the camp, Mukai also operated the radio shop and converted AM radios to shortwave so internees could listen to radio from Japan.
After his release from the camp, Mukai worked as a handyman at the New Richmond Hotel. He was later employed as an engineer on overhead lines for Seattle City Light, where he worked until his retirement in 1983. Mukai died on October 27, 2005 at the age of 87.
