Biographical Note

Robert Miller is a Portland-based artist and educator who founded Lewis & Clark College's photography program in 1984, working there for 30 years. Previously, he taught at The Museum School, Portland Community College and University of Portland. In his early life, Miller served as a photographer in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and later worked with Shedrich Williames at the Mr. Pix camera store in Oregon City. Both as a freelance photographer and as Senior Lecturer in Art, he specialized in portraiture, with notable contributions also in still-life and landscape photography in a variety of media. Holding an M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago, and a B.F.A from the University of Oregon, Miller's extensive body of work has been featured worldwide, with many housed locally in the Portland Art Museum and private galleries. Miller was twice an artist in residence at the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. He is a member of the Pacific Northwest Photographers Archive.

Miller describes his photography in this way: "In my work, I have attempted to find the resonance at the mysterious place where the inner and outer realms come together. This place where resonance is created has been called mystical in religious and theological terminology, and it has been called mythopoeic in literary and mythological studies. Whatever it is called, photography that produces this resonance transports me to a realm that lies beyond the intellect, the abstract, and the analytical."

Four years later, he moved to Portland to teach acrylic painting, a style-medium he developed during his education. • Leaving Home Project

From associated materials: [...] collaboration between Robert B. Miller and Joyce De Monnin. [Joyce De Monnin narrates that] One beautiful July morning as I was getting ready for work, the phone rang. My sister Charlyne said the caregiver had been fired, and Mom couldn't be left home alone. Arrangements for her care absolutely had to be made. A review of the finances led to one conclusion: the house would need to be sold to pay for Mom's care. It was not an easy decision. Ethelyn DeMonnin's to age at home hope was well known. She had spoken with her children about it. She had made her wishes plain. While the house was Mom's, it belonged to all of us, her children and grandchildren alike. No matter what happened in our life, we were welcome through this front door. It was a safe harbor. It was part of our identity. My sister and I talked with Mom and tried to explain the situation. She could barely speak; the aphasia was robbing her of her speech a little more every month. "No!" she cried. "Mommy," we pleaded, "you have to go." When the time came, we packed her suitcase and helped Mom guide her walker down the path. It wasn't necessarily like her to be stoic. She looked ahead, she didn't complain, and she didn't cry. As we closed the front door that day, the world as I had known it for more than 40 years careened out of sight. Once Mom was safely settled in foster care, came the job of sorting, packing, cleaning and selling the house. In the chaos of those summer days, my husband Robert asked if he could photograph the house. I couldn't fathom why he'd be interested in documenting this transition, but I invited him in while we went about Mom's business. What emerged from Robert's work was more than a record of Mom's house. It's a glimpse into a life, a family, and a generation. We can peer into a world now lost. The photos echo with happiness and heartache, laughter, and tears. Under the care of my husband's lens, the turning point in our family's history is with us always. But Robert wasn't satisfied by just taking the photos. For more than two years, he urged me to "write something." I really didn't know what to do or what to say. How do you look at family photographs that are so familiar they don't speak to you? How do you tell the truth and keep secrets. How do you get started? While my mother was alive, I was consumed with my career at AARP, and also being a part-time caregiver, a trinity of children who attended to her needs while managing busy adult lives. I had tried a few times to write captions to the photos, but it was very difficult. The summer after Mom died, Robert was planning an exhibition with another art professor at Lewis & Clark College. While reviewing some ideas for the show, curator Linda Tesner was moved by the images of the home. She said the smaller, front gallery would be a perfect place to display them almost as if the room and the home morphed into one. We immediately loved the idea, but something was missing. Robert once again urged me to "write something" to go along with each photograph. I sat with his work prints. One by one, they evoked memories, memories led to ideas and stories and feelings. They led to observations and tears. They let me see my family in a new way. The photographs with their captions were shown at the Hoffman Gallery on the Lewis and Clark campus in 2011. The show also resulted in a nearly full-page story in the Oregonian [...] and an interview on Oregon Public Broadcasting. The stories and pictures are unique to my family but they also tell the story of a generation of boomers saying goodbye to The Greatest Generation. Caregiving, downsizing, and legacy are part of every family. I was lucky enough to have a husband who knew this was a beautiful way to tell the universal story.

    • Description: Portraits and cityscapes from Portland and Seattle

From associated materials: [As Robert Miller narrates] Sometimes incredible compelling photographs emerge from street scenes. The shots feel spontaneous and even mesmerizing. In this shot children innocently playing in a fountain seem to confront an eerie character emerging from the water. It's at once full of the delights of summer, but is there something else? With abstract photography, we can break tried and true rules to explore the freedom to engage the viewer on a deeper level through compelling visuals and experimenting with camera technique. This collection of street scenes are from my years as a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, working in Portland and visiting in Seattle.
