Historical Note
Laurence Ilsley Hewes Jr. (1902- ) graduated from Dartmouth in 1924 and worked as an investment banker in San Francisco from 1925-1933. From 1935-1939 he served as assistant to the administrator of the Farm Security Administration and then was the regional director at San Francisco from 1939-1944. He was the west coast director of the American Council of Race Relations from 1944-1947 and from 1947-1949 he was a land reform adviser in Japan.
From 1950-1959 Hewes served with the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver and from 1959-1962 he served with the U.S. Outdoor Recreation Resources Commission and from 1963-1965 he was a rural development advisor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in India. In 1963 he was a consultant with the World Bank and a fellow for the Study of Democratic Institutions in California from 1972-1973 and 1976-1977.
Content Description
Collection contains materials relating to Hewes' work in agricultural administration, including correspondence dealing with the Outdoor Recreation Resources Commission, agriculture in India and publications of articles and books (1964-1974); speeches (1944-1946); newspaper clippings (1942-1974); reports by Hewes on rural development and agricultural production in India (1965).
Also included are articles on the Farm Security Administration, land reform, energy needs and rural development (1942-1966); and manuscripts of Hewes' works, including "World Population Growth, Food and Fibre Needs and Environmental Considerations," "Expanding World Needs for Food and Fibre and Protection of the Ecosystem," and "Rural Developments : World Frontiers" (1942-1974).
